Remember when you had to drag your guitar to the music store and take lessons in a cramped practice room? You spent as much time driving as you did learning, and you were limited to the instructors available close to your home.

With new technology, you can choose your instructor and meet with him weekly no matter where you live! No more driving. No more lugging your axe from place to place. Get this - now you can turn on your computer, connect to Skype, and meet your new guitar teacher.

This is where I come in. I am Rod Goelz, an author, professional musician, and teacher. My books, the Basses Loaded and Make it Funky series, introduced countless musicians to innovative and fun ways to learn guitar and bass. I teach like I write, and I write like I play – with enthusiasm, excitement, and creativity.

My bass guitar coaching focuses on groove improvisation - improvisation that serves a supportive purpose. As a guitar or bass student, you will learn to adapt to any musical situation with improvisation, an expanded music vocabulary, and an intimate understanding of the history behind the music. Together we will explore the basics and apply these to real music. Before you know it, you will be playing, exploring different styles, and becoming a performer.

And you can do all of this with me, from the comfort of your own home. I offer lessons tailored to your tastes and learning objectives. We design your instruction together, finding creative ways to use the music you love to teach you what you need to know. We make your musical journey fun, while ensuring you get the solid foundation you need to grow as a musician. We will get you where you need to go musically, through the magic of the Internet.

Which instruments do you teach?
Guitar and bass guitar.

I am a beginner. I don’t know anything about where to begin. Can you help me?
Absolutely! You leave it to me. I will get you started and help you choose attainable goals. You are going to have fun!

I have been playing for years and I have specific goals in mind. What can you do for me?
Together we will develop a customized, unique plan that gets you where you want to be no matter what your starting point. I can meet you where you are and take you where you want to go.

What will I need to participate in online lessons?
I recommend that my online students have the following:

• A guitar (or bass guitar), obviously!
• A tuner
• A tuned instrument, of course!
• A high-speed Internet connection (DSL or Cable)
• A Mac or PC with the ability to connect to high-speed Internet
• A webcam connected to your computer
• Adobe Acrobat (to open pdf lesson files)
• A free Skype account (for video/audio calls)
• A metronome program (an iPad/iPhone app, for example)
• A willingness and enthusiasm to learn
• A list of goals you want to achieve through our lessons

What if I don’t have these things?
Not to worry! I will talk you through the set-up process and get you started!

What musical styles can I learn with you?
If you can think of it, I’ve probably played it! Let’s learn what you love! Some popular styles include:

• Rock
• Blues
• Jazz
• Latin
• Afro Cuban
• Swing
• R&B
• Funk
• Jamaican - Reggae, Dub, Ska
• Country
• Bluegrass
• Hip Hop
• A combination of any of these!

No style is off limits - each one gives you an opportunity to reinterpret rhythm, melody, and harmony.

Music theory? What’s that all about? Tell me what I will learn.
Music theory covers the rules behind how we play and explains why things work musically. Our studies will give you an understanding of the basics of music. You will apply these principles to real music, playing situations, exploring many different styles, and learning to speak in these styles—rhythmically, melodically, and convincingly!

Is there a music vocabulary for me to learn?
Yes, but don’t panic. This is going to be fun! As we explore music and pursue your goals, you will learn the names for the things we do musically. We will cover:

• Basic vocabulary
• Melodic vocabulary
• Harmonic vocabulary
• Rhythmic vocabulary
• Technical vocabulary
• Stylistic vocabulary
• “Artist” Style Vocabulary
• And lots more!

I am an aspiring bass player. What is your philosophy on the bass guitar?
The bass is the foundation of everything. A great bass player doesn’t necessarily draw attention to himself/herself. The bass player makes everyone else sound good. As a student you will learn the basic principles and apply these to all styles of music. As you develop your chops, you will learn how to play “what’s not there” – that magic something that is essential to making the GROOVE and SONG sound complete. Once this is established, you will discover places where you can really shine! No style is off limits - each one offers a new take on how to interpret rhythm, melody, & harmony!
